Built by Escher & Wyss (Zurich, Switzerland) and in operation from 1913 - 1962 and again from 1990 until today.  Length is 56.9 m and width is 6.5m.  Tonnage : Displacement - 365. Engines : Compound Diagonal : 950 HP - Escher, Wyss, Zurich - 1913 Top speed : 16.7 knots Built for the Royal Wurrtemberg Railways (absorbed into the German Railways in 1918).

Two fleet mates were sunk in an air attack at Fridrichshafen in April 1944.  The Hohentwiel remained at Konstanz, escaping damage.  She was withdrawn later in 1962 and used as the Sailing Club HQ at Bregenz with her machinery remaining intact. The International Preservation Society established to save the vessel from disposal which led to renovation from 1986-1989. The Society included German, Swiss and Austrian local authority and business interests.  Two new boilers were installed and the superstructure returned to its original form.  It is in operation for special sailings and charters since 1990.
